Guitarist, singer, and composer John Renbourn recently died of an apparent heart attack at his home in the Scottish Borders. Best known for his work with traditional folk/rock group Pentangle, his fluid guitar interplay with fellow guitarist Bert Jansch was a marvel of inventiveness and emotion, never nearing the uselessly frilly virtuosity of other less gifted players. While he worked in a conservative vernacular, he was far from a musical purist, subtly combining ancient (sitar) with modern (electric guitar, fuzz-box, and wha-wha). His quiet brand of guitar renewal and creativity will certainly be missed by those who actually listen.
