ANDY WARHOL'S "EGGS"

Much of his work from his last decade (1977-87) remains scarcely seen and written about. His fine series of "Shadows" paintings come readily to mind.  The "Eggs" paintings represent not only a seemingly out of nowhere rush into pure painting,  but to a kind of thoughtful minimalist abstraction as well. Strangely enough their references reach not only into the realm of hard edge abstraction,  but to his early tenure as graphic designer and illustrator. Not bad for a guy who supposedly gave up painting to make his own brand of experimental, oops,  popular movies.
